Zum Announces Major Investment in Philadelphia to Support Students, Families, and Local Workforce

Zum, a leader in modern student mobility, today announced a major long-term investment in Philadelphia with the lease and redevelopment of a new school
bus yard that will serve as Zum's home base as it launches home-to-school transportation services for the School District of Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA — In a milestone development for modern student mobility, Zum has officially announced a major, long-term investment in the City of Philadelphia. As the company prepares to launch home-to-school transportation services for the School District of Philadelphia starting in the 2026–27 school year, this strategic expansion combines state-of-the-art infrastructure development, extensive job creation, and cutting-edge transportation technology.

Establishing a Permanent Home Base in Northeast Philadelphia

At the core of Zum’s multi-million-dollar local commitment is the lease and comprehensive redevelopment of a new, centralized operations and maintenance hub. Located at 3740 E. Thompson Street and 2715 E. Butler Street in Northeast Philadelphia, the two adjacent properties are undergoing significant modernization.

Designed with drivers and fleet efficiency in mind, the new facility will feature:

  • Advanced Maintenance Capabilities: Top-tier service bays to keep the modern fleet running safely and efficiently.
  • Modern Employee Amenities: High-quality rest areas, collaborative workspaces, and supportive facilities designed to prioritize driver comfort.
  • Strategic Positioning: Centrally located to minimize transit and travel times for local personnel while optimizing daily home-to-school routes.

"Philadelphia is more than a new market for Zum—it is a long-term partnership and a community where we plan to invest for decades to come," said Vivek Garg, Chief Operating Officer at Zum. "We are creating local jobs, investing in modern infrastructure, and building an operation designed to serve students and families with the reliability, transparency, and accountability they deserve."

Powering the Local Economy and Creating Quality Jobs

Beyond upgrading physical infrastructure, Zum’s expansion is injecting vital momentum into the local economy by creating hundreds of stable, well-paying jobs for Philadelphia residents.

As the company gears up for the upcoming school year, Zum is actively recruiting and hiring school bus drivers and attendants. Highlighting competitive compensation packages—including hourly rates ranging from $30.23 to $37.33 for drivers and $20.10 to $30.00 for attendants—alongside robust medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) benefits, Zum is setting a new standard for employer-employee relations in the student transportation sector.

"There is no more important job than safely getting students to and from school every weekday," noted Missy Lash, General Manager at Zum. "Our investment in Philadelphia goes beyond buses—it's an investment in the people who make student mobility possible. We want our drivers to have a modern, welcoming facility where they feel comfortable, respected, and supported every day."

Partnering with prominent commercial real estate leaders like Triten Real Estate Partners—who facilitated the acquisition of the Thompson and Butler street locations—Zum has locked in the physical foundation necessary to sustain long-term growth across the region.

Bringing AI-Powered Safety and Transparency to Philadelphia Families

Under its landmark agreement with the School District of Philadelphia, Zum is slated to cover a minimum of 200 routes spanning approximately 330 schools.

What sets Zum apart from traditional student transportation models is its proprietary Connected Mobility Experience (CMX) platform. Powered by advanced AI and data-driven systems, the CMX platform unifies routing, live dispatch, real-time fleet operations, and parent communications into a single, seamless digital ecosystem.

Key Benefits for the School District and Families:

  • Real-Time Visibility: Parents can use the Zum app to track their child’s bus location in real-time, view driver and vehicle credentials, and receive proactive pick-up and drop-off alerts.
  • Unmatched Reliability: Districts utilizing Zum consistently achieve stellar metrics, averaging a 98% on-time performance rate nationwide.
  • Next-Generation Fleet: Philadelphia students and drivers will benefit from a modern fleet featuring top-tier safety features, ergonomic seating, and full air-conditioning.

Looking Ahead: A New Standard for Student Mobility

With operations spanning more than 6,500 schools across 18 states, Zum's arrival in Philadelphia marks a pivotal shift toward smarter, safer, and more accountable student transit. By fusing heavy investments in local real estate, workforce empowerment, and next-generation transit technology, Zum is laying down tracks for a future where parents have absolute peace of mind and students arrive at school safe, secure, and ready to learn.
