America's Roads, America's Favorites: A Look at H1 2025 Car Sales
The first half of 2025 has once again confirmed a dominant trend in the U.S. automotive market: trucks and SUVs reign supreme. Data from trusted industry sources reveals a clear preference among American consumers for vehicles that offer size, utility, and versatility over traditional sedans.
Of the top 20 best-selling vehicles from January through June 2025, an overwhelming majority—nine out of the top ten—are either pickup trucks or SUVs. This trend reflects a long-standing "love affair" with larger vehicles that show no signs of slowing down.
The Top Performers
Unsurprisingly, the Ford F-Series continues its decades-long reign as the best-selling vehicle in the nation, with a commanding 412,848 units sold. Close behind is the Chevrolet Silverado at 284,038 units, solidifying the top two spots for pickup trucks.
The leading compact SUVs, the Toyota RAV4 (239,451) and the Honda CR-V (212,561), hold the third and fourth spots, respectively, highlighting the broad appeal of this segment. Rounding out the top five is the Ram Truck with 174,320 units sold.
The collective strength of the top five models—three pickups and two compact SUVs—is immense, making up approximately 42% of all sales within the top 20. This indicates a highly concentrated market where a few key models drive a significant portion of overall sales volume.
Sedans' Shift in the Market
The data shows a continued decline in the prominence of sedans. Only one sedan, the Toyota Camry, managed to crack the top 10, landing at the eighth spot with 155,330 units sold. While sedans still have a market, their presence on the bestseller list is a stark contrast to their former dominance. Looking at the full top 20, SUVs accounted for 47% of sales, trucks for 37%, and sedans for just 16%.
This clear shift away from sedans and toward crossovers and trucks has been a consistent trend since at least 2015, driven by changing consumer priorities and the rise of more efficient, comfortable, and feature-rich SUVs.
