Revolutionizing Recycling: SUSTAINera and SOREMO Forge Closed-Loop for Stellantis Engine Aluminum

AMSTERDAM, October 7, 2025
– Stellantis’ SUSTAINera Circular Economy business unit is taking a bold step forward in sustainable manufacturing, announcing its participation at POLLUTEC 2025 alongside long-time partner SOREMO. Together, the two entities are showcasing a critical advancement in the automotive value chain: a dedicated closed-loop circular economy for aluminum recovered from End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) engines.

This strategic partnership is a clear demonstration of Stellantis' commitment to environmental stewardship and its goal of becoming a carbon net-zero corporation.

Closing the Loop: From Scrap to New Engines

SOREMO, a French pioneer in ELV engine recycling since 1986, annually collects and processes over 60,000 tons of ELV engines across Europe. Their expertise goes beyond simple shredding, focusing on advanced material sorting to recover high-value materials including iron, copper, plastics, and, crucially, aluminum.

The partnership officially established a closed loop for aluminum in 2025, ensuring maximum resource efficiency:

  1. Collection: End-of-life engines are collected from the Dismantling Center at the Circular Economy Hub in Turin as well as from selected Authorized Treatment Facilities (ATFs).

  2. Processing: SOREMO processes these recovered ELV materials, refining the aluminum into high-quality ingots.

  3. Reintegration: These aluminum ingots are directly supplied to the Stellantis foundry in Mulhouse.

  4. Manufacturing: The recycled aluminum is then used to manufacture new Stellantis engines.

This process effectively transforms post-consumer waste into new, high-value components, significantly reducing the demand for virgin materials and lowering the environmental impact of engine production.

SUSTAINera’s Role in Material Flow Management

SUSTAINera drives this strategic transformation through its comprehensive Material Flow Management system. This system is key to the "Recycle" element of Stellantis' 4R Strategy (Reman, Reuse, Repair, and Recycle).

SUSTAINera actively develops solutions to recover and reintegrate valuable materials—including batteries, aluminum, copper, and plastics—from various sources, such as internal industrial waste, after-sales maintenance activities, and ELVs. These efforts create circular closed material loops that feed recovered resources back into the production of new vehicles and parts.

Furthermore, SUSTAINera Valorauto, a specialized joint venture for ELV management, plays a vital role in supporting the recovery and recycling of components. This expanding network not only strengthens the recycling value chain but also helps to secure the supply of critical materials for Stellantis' industrial operations.

By co-developing this efficient materials ecosystem with partners like SOREMO, Stellantis is actively shaping a more circular and sustainable future for the entire automotive industry, turning waste into a resource.
